Apple Warns EU Tech Law Is Hurting Customers as Features Get Delayed

Apple (AAPL, Financials) is pressing European regulators to roll back the bloc's new Digital Markets Act, arguing the law has slowed product updates and made devices less secure for consumers.

The company told the European Commission this week that the law has forced it to delay several new features in the region, including iPhone-to-Mac mirroring, live translation for AirPods, and certain location-based tools in Maps. Apple said the DMA's interoperability requirements have created engineering challenges that could expose users to scams, malware and unwanted apps.

A commission spokesperson reiterated that the law requires gatekeepers such as Apple to open their platforms to competitors, saying compliance is not optional.

Apple, which sells millions of devices in the EU, said its proposed safeguards were rejected by regulators and that it cannot meet all DMA obligations without compromising data security. It's become clear that we can't solve every problem the DMA creates, the company said.

The European Union is looking into how well the law worked during its first year in place. The review's results could affect how Apple and other big internet companies' platforms work in the European market in the future.
