Is the market willing to go home short

News about a virus variant in South Africa and the possibility that the Fed may speed up there tapering and interest rate increased selling order flow into the S&P as the market tried to assess what this uncertainty means longer-term. The S&P reacted instantly to this news but when it finishes this reaction what is the incentive to continue lower without new information.
