The Casablanca Court of Appeal ruled that Thomas Clausi, a 21-year-old Frenchman, will be sentenced to 18 months in prison for fraud and illegal use of cryptocurrency, and compensate the victims. It is worth noting that the defendant has been serving his sentence in prison since December 2021. Therefore, his lawyer Mohamed Aghanaj said that the imprisonment time is coming to an end. From the time of his initial imprisonment, Thomas Clausi only needs to serve another month and a few days in prison. It is reported that a few years ago, the defendant Thomas Clausi bought a Ferrari from a French woman in Morocco with bitcoin worth $440,000. Later, the woman reported his fraud to the authorities. Clausi also bought three luxury watches from another man, but gave him a fake check, which led the man to report the case to the authorities. In the first case, the defendant paid in encrypted currency, which is illegal in Morocco. Therefore, local laws consider this method illegal. In the second case, Clausi used a check that could not be processed due to insufficient funds to deceive another victim.
