BTC consumes as much energy as the entire country of Pakistan?

According to MarketWatch, bitcoin consumes as much energy as the entire country of Pakistan, and almost as much as the Netherlands..

Hard to believe, but that's what it says.

Is that really sustainable? Or even necessary, for that matter..
