The modern middle ages

When the USD collapses the US will become a version of the middle ages except technology will be more advanced. But you will have kingdoms fighting over which currency gets to be accepted and the king will be the one who mints it. Of course there will be several people wanting to be kings, and they will gather support from various groups of people because despite its eternal potential for corruption, money is an important part of human life! (And who doesent want to participate in good old fashioned conquest)

So you are gonna have gold bugs trying to form various kinds of currencies, but you also going to have cryptocurrency factions. You will have various cryptocurrencies going to war with each other, literally shedding blood, in order to become number 1 on coinmarketcap.com

Its not gonna be pretty. So if you wanna thrive going forward you need to study the middle ages and find inspirations on which professions did well and how people rose to the top and acquired land and how justice was served. Because like i said, when the USD collapses the US will fall back into a mentality reminiscent of the middle ages and it was tough. Lots of infighting, bloodshed, misery, war. It will just become the norm, part of the culture. Of course its not going to happen over night. So you have ample time to prepare and adapt . Godspeed!

"Daily commerce in Europe during the Middle Ages was conducted not with gold coins, but rather with silver and bronze coins. In fact, most ordinary people during the Middle Ages probably rarely even saw gold coins."

So if you already own gold you are off to a good start. However, you would probably not be able to hold on to it if you weren't able to defend it somehow.
